Description

The City of Cape Town invites applications from unemployed South African graduates under the age of 35 to participate in the Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG) Training Programme, funded by the National Treasury. This three-year graduate trainee opportunity is designed to build engineering competencies aligned with professional registration requirements through structured mentorship, practical experience, and participation in capital and operational projects. Successful candidates will engage with various engineering disciplines, contribute to municipal development, and work toward registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). The programme supports career development in a professional municipal environment and aims to enhance infrastructure capacity within the city.

Responsibilities

• Produce a tailor-made training plan in line with professional council requirements with the mentor and complete the structured program to build competencies for professional registration
• Participate in research and capital or operational projects relevant to the statutory professional council (ECSA)
• Participate in all ISDG related activities and engage with different engineering disciplines
• Provide monthly and quarterly training progress reports
• Ensure all reports are conducted in a professional manner and in the interest of the City of Cape Town
• Perform various routine activities in line with training plans
• Register professionally with the relevant statutory professional council (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer, Technologist or Technician within a three-year period
• Collaborate with the supervisor to gain practical experience toward professional registration

Qualifications

• Unemployed South African graduates below the age of 35 years
• Diploma, Advanced Diploma, B Tech, B Eng, BSc, MTech, M Eng, MSc or PhD qualification in Chemical, Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
• Eligible to register with a relevant statutory professional council (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer, Technologist or Technician
• A code B driver’s licence will be an added advantage
